What decides the number

Five things about your Gengar, in order of how much they matter.

  1. Which printing. Gengar spans 28 sets, from Fossil in 1999 to Perfect Order in 2026, and the set symbol beside the picture is what tells one from another before anything else about the card is worth discussing.
  2. First edition and shadowless. 4 of the 40 date from 1999–2000, and on a Gengar of that age the small “1 Edition” stamp left of the art, or a frame throwing no drop shadow down the right of the picture, is worth more than everything else on this list put together.
  3. Which card type. A Gengar Tag Team and a Gengar owner’s card are different cards that happen to share a name — Gengar has been printed as 8 types in all, so the word beside Gengar at the top decides which of the 40 you own.
  4. Promo stamps. 2 of the 40 Gengar cards were promos rather than pack pulls, and a black star, a tournament stamp or a set-launch mark in the corner is what turns an otherwise ordinary Gengar into the scarce one.
  5. Centering. Hold your Gengar at arm’s length and look at the border: a Gengar with a visibly fatter margin on one side is capped on grade before condition is even discussed, and the Team Up printings are the ones we see off-centre most often.
