How much is a Gyarados card worth?

There are 44 English Gyarados cards, spread over 34 sets between 1999 and 2025. The first was Gyarados in Base, 9 January 1999, drawn by Mitsuhiro Arita in the very first English sets. 6 of them come from 1999–2000, and those trade in a different world from everything printed since — which is why one number for “Gyarados” means nothing until you know which of the 44 you are holding.

What we pay is a different number. These are TCGplayer market prices, worked out from recent sales between collectors, read 2026-09-08. What a buyer pays is always less than what a collector pays, and it turns on the condition of the card in your hand — which is why you get our number on the phone, in one call, before anything is posted.

Spaced by ratio, not by dollars, so the cheap end stays readable. Tap a handle to jump to that card. 11 of the 44 have no market price on file.

What decides the number

Five things about your Gyarados, in order of how much they matter.

  1. Which printing. Gyarados spans 34 sets, from Base in 1999 to Destined Rivals in 2025, and the set symbol beside the picture is what tells one from another before anything else about the card is worth discussing.
  2. First edition and shadowless. 6 of the 44 date from 1999–2000, and on a Gyarados of that age the small “1 Edition” stamp left of the art, or a frame throwing no drop shadow down the right of the picture, is worth more than everything else on this list put together.
  3. Which card type. A Gyarados Dark and a Gyarados owner’s card are different cards that happen to share a name — Gyarados has been printed as 8 types in all, so the word beside Gyarados at the top decides which of the 44 you own.
  4. Promo stamps. 2 of the 44 Gyarados cards were promos rather than pack pulls, and a black star, a tournament stamp or a set-launch mark in the corner is what turns an otherwise ordinary Gyarados into the scarce one.
  5. The Shining ones. 1 Gyarados card carries the Shining treatment, printed deliberately short — if the word Shining sits before Gyarados on your card, that is the first thing to tell us.
  • Most Gyarados cards are Rare Holo — 19 of the 44.
  • Mitsuhiro Arita has illustrated Gyarados more than anyone else, 8 times.
  • Evolving Skies carries the most Gyarados cards of any single set (4).
  • Gyarados has been printed under 8 card types: Dark, owner’s card, V, VMAX, ex (modern), Shining.
  • 6 of the 44 Gyarados cards come from 1999–2000, the printings collectors ask after most.
  • 22 different illustrators have drawn Gyarados.
  • 26 years separate the first Gyarados card from the newest.
