What decides the number

Five things about your Ho-Oh, in order of how much they matter.

  1. Which printing. Ho-Oh spans 16 sets, from Unseen Forces in 2005 to Chaos Rising in 2026, and the set symbol beside the picture is what tells one from another before anything else about the card is worth discussing.
  2. Which card type. A Ho-Oh ex and a Ho-Oh ex are different cards that happen to share a name — Ho-Oh has been printed as 6 types in all, so the word beside Ho-Oh at the top decides which of the 24 you own.
  3. Promo stamps. 4 of the 24 Ho-Oh cards were promos rather than pack pulls, and a black star, a tournament stamp or a set-launch mark in the corner is what turns an otherwise ordinary Ho-Oh into the scarce one.
  4. The Shining ones. 1 Ho-Oh card carries the Shining treatment, printed deliberately short — if the word Shining sits before Ho-Oh on your card, that is the first thing to tell us.
