What decides the number

Five things about your Venusaur, in order of how much they matter.

  1. Which printing. Venusaur spans 23 sets, from Base in 1999 to Stellar Crown in 2024, and the set symbol beside the picture is what tells one from another before anything else about the card is worth discussing.
  2. First edition and shadowless. 4 of the 31 date from 1999–2000, and on a Venusaur of that age the small “1 Edition” stamp left of the art, or a frame throwing no drop shadow down the right of the picture, is worth more than everything else on this list put together.
  3. Which card type. A Venusaur Tag Team and a Venusaur ex are different cards that happen to share a name — Venusaur has been printed as 8 types in all, so the word beside Venusaur at the top decides which of the 31 you own.
  4. Promo stamps. 4 of the 31 Venusaur cards were promos rather than pack pulls, and a black star, a tournament stamp or a set-launch mark in the corner is what turns an otherwise ordinary Venusaur into the scarce one.
