Moltres · 33 cards · 1999–2025

How much is a Moltres card worth?

There are 33 English Moltres cards, spread over 24 sets between 1999 and 2025. It did not debut in a booster pack at all: the first was Moltres in Wizards Black Star Promos, 1 July 1999, handed out during the very first English sets. 5 of them come from 1999–2000, and those trade in a different world from everything printed since — which is why one number for “Moltres” means nothing until you know which of the 33 you are holding.

What we pay is a different number. These are TCGplayer market prices, worked out from recent sales between collectors, read 2026-09-08. What a buyer pays is always less than what a collector pays, and it turns on the condition of the card in your hand — which is why you get our number on the phone, in one call, before anything is posted.

What decides the number

Five things about your Moltres, in order of how much they matter.

  1. Which printing. Moltres spans 24 sets, from Wizards Black Star Promos in 1999 to Phantasmal Flames in 2025, and the set symbol beside the picture is what tells one from another before anything else about the card is worth discussing.
  2. First edition and shadowless. 5 of the 33 date from 1999–2000, and on a Moltres of that age the small “1 Edition” stamp left of the art, or a frame throwing no drop shadow down the right of the picture, is worth more than everything else on this list put together.
  3. Which card type. A Moltres Tag Team and a Moltres ex are different cards that happen to share a name — Moltres has been printed as 4 types in all, so the word beside Moltres at the top decides which of the 33 you own.
  4. Promo stamps. 6 of the 33 Moltres cards were promos rather than pack pulls, and a black star, a tournament stamp or a set-launch mark in the corner is what turns an otherwise ordinary Moltres into the scarce one.
  5. Centering. Hold your Moltres at arm’s length and look at the border: a Moltres with a visibly fatter margin on one side is capped on grade before condition is even discussed, and the Hidden Fates printings are the ones we see off-centre most often.
  • Most Moltres cards are Rare Holo — 10 of the 33.
  • Mitsuhiro Arita has illustrated Moltres more than anyone else, 5 times.
  • Hidden Fates carries the most Moltres cards of any single set (3).
  • Moltres has been printed under 4 card types: Tag Team, ex (2003–07), ex (modern), owner’s card.
  • No Moltres card was printed at all for 4 years, 2004 to 2008.
  • 5 of the 33 Moltres cards come from 1999–2000, the printings collectors ask after most.
  • 18 different illustrators have drawn Moltres.
  • 26 years separate the first Moltres card from the newest.
