What decides the number

Five things about your Moltres, in order of how much they matter.

  1. Which printing. Moltres spans 28 sets, from Wizards Black Star Promos in 1999 to Phantasmal Flames in 2025, and the set symbol beside the picture is what tells one from another before anything else about the card is worth discussing.
  2. First edition. 4 of the 42 come from sets printed in a 1st Edition run, and on a Moltres of that age the small “1 Edition” stamp left of the art changes the price, often several times over. On PriceCharting the 1st Edition Blaine's Moltres from Gym Heroes is about $308 ungraded against $81 for the Unlimited one, 4 times as much.
  3. Which card type. A Moltres V and a Moltres Tag Team are different cards that happen to share a name — Moltres has been printed as 6 types in all, so the word beside Moltres at the top decides which of the 42 you own.
  4. Promo stamps. 8 of the 42 Moltres cards were promos rather than pack pulls, and a black star, a tournament stamp or a set-launch mark in the corner is what separates one Moltres promo from another with the same picture.
  5. Centering. Hold your Moltres at arm’s length and look at the border: a Moltres with a visibly fatter margin on one side is capped on grade before condition is even discussed, and with 3 of the 42 from Hidden Fates alone, that is the set to check most carefully.
